Friends & Family Night at McMenamins Grand Lodge

On Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012, the Forest Grove Library Foundation will collaborate with McMenamins Grand Lodge to hold a Friends & Family Night. From 5 p.m. to closing, 50% of the sales of food and drink from the Ironworks Grill (inside the main Lodge) will be donated to the Library Foundation.

The Forest Grove Library Foundation’s newest capital campaign, entitled The Story Unfolds, is raising funds to purchase art, furniture and signage for the newly renovated wing of the library.

The remodel of the original section of the library provided a better space and building for library patrons, but lacked some final touches that would make it feel complete. With the completion of this new campaign, the Foundation will replace dated furniture from the original 1978 building; update the children’s section, making it welcoming and stimulating to promote early childhood love of reading and learning; update the Spanish language section and add art, including a unique piece by internationally renowned glass artist Ed Carpenter.

Join us for good food, friendly company and to benefit a great cause! We’ll be developing more community events to benefit the library over the next several months and would love to see throngs of library supporters at all of them.

June 30 Deadline for Matching Grants

Last year, the Forest Grove Library Foundation received a $10,000 conditional grant from the Oregon Community Foundation. The OCF grant required us to raise $80,000 for the current capital campaign by June 30, 2012.  We had raised about $75,000 by May 21, the date of the FGLF Board Meeting. At that meeting, three board members donated a $2500 “matching” grant that will be made if another $2500 can be raised from library supporters by June 30, 2012. This month offers a great opportunity to increase the power of individual gifts because these gifts will help trigger the $2500 match from FGLF board members as well as the $10,000 OCF grant.

New Children’s Furniture Enhances Comfort and Safety, and Looks Great, Too!

Librarian Linda Stiles Taylor writes:

We have enjoyed ten wonderful new tables and twenty-two chairs for elementary-aged children, for five months now, thanks to the Forest Grove Library Foundation. After years of battered, heavy, adult-sized tables with sharp corners, and tippy adult-sized chairs that seemed to say, “stand on me” to little people, we are very excited about the change in the Children’s Area.

The new tables are colorful and inviting. The three different table shapes are frequently rearranged into different configurations for classes, events and families. The chairs are comfortable, made of stackable wood, and designed to reduce the chance of tipping over backward.

The whole Children’s Area looks more attractive and more inviting to the age group it is intended for. If you visit the children’s area nowadays, it definitely says, “KIDS.” And, what do you know? This summer numbers were up for kids completing the Summer Reading program. A more welcoming environment helps!

We still have a ways to go in improving the Children’s Area. With the Foundation’s help, we will add additional furnishings in the early childhood area, a child-sized early literacy computer, a big “sense of arrival” feature at the entrance to the children’s area, and some additional shelving to make the library collection more accessible to kids. So keep checking us out … great things to come!

The remodel of the original section of the library provided a better space and building for library patrons, but lacked some final touches that would make it feel complete. Current Foundation Project

The current Foundation project — to raise $250,000 for furniture, art and signage — got underway in September 2010 with leadership gifts. One-hundred percent of the membership of the Forest Grove City Council, the Library Commission, the Friends of the Library and the Library Foundation — 21 leaders in the community and library supporters all — donated funds to show their support for the Foundation’s project.

With the hiring of a grant writer, three grant requests were also submitted in September. A month later word came that two of the three requests were granted: Juan Young Trust for $5,000; and Oregon Community Foundation for $10,000. The OCF commitment is a matching grant that we will receive only when all fundraising is complete.

The Forest Grove Library Foundation depends on individual gifts, big and small, to improve our library. Watch for the community fundraising events in 2011 that will help our library‘s story unfold.
